A vertical social networking platform doesn't seem to be a good idea for many. Many say that an ideal networking platform should be across the verticals. But people with an inception of mariners from more than 15 countries, we have given them a big question mark to think over it again...:)
Wikipedia says that a social network is a social structure made of nodes that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency. We see lots and lots of social networking sites for mass audience like orkut, facebook, etc. Vertical social networks are mostly very niche, which target a very specific set of users, rather than mass audience. Like the areas which people are passionate about, which would interest them to connect to each other. SeaFolks.com is one such networking site for merchant navy officers across the world to connect to each other.
SeaFolks are the merchant navy officers who man ships. Merchant Navy is a very specialized and challenging career. Over 90% of the world trade is carried by the international shipping industry. The world shipping fleet is registered in over 150 nations. They work away from their friends and family on ship, which is continuously rolling and pitching. Adhere to the mental and physical fitness. According to the nature of this profession, officers tend to have a special set of needs and orientation, which is very difficult to be satisfied by mass networking site. We Say that SeaFolks.com is a den of a very talented, creative yet humble and down to earth merchant navy officers. The aim is to get together to improve our collective lives by sharing useful information. Its all about empowering mariners with the power of Internet.
SeaFolks.com provides a network for mariners to find new avenues for themselves, reach out to a wider maritime world. Help them share knowledge and be updated with the latest in marine technology that way. These are some of the main reasons why we SeaFolks could rock the world in real sense.

Hello umesh, I read you blog and I also read a blog about vertical
social networking on Fled thoughts. I kind of agree with you in this case. I think only the vertical community like yours can fulfill the actual requirements of such a different profession. I think I will this include it in my next blog.
